It will surely be the legal battle of all time in Abia State as Engr Chinedu Onyeizu of the Labour Party hires Peter Obi’s statistician as his expert and star witness in the petition he filed before the elections tribunal challenging INEC’s declaration of Abaribe as the winner of the February 25, 2023 senatorial election in Abia South.

Recall that the returning officer, Prof Georgina Ugwuanyi, who earlier declared the election inconclusive, made a volte-face a few hours later and declared Abaribe winner even when elections did not hold in 108 polling units of the senatorial district. Chinedu Onyeizu is challenging, among other issues, whether it is justifiable to declare Abaribe winner when the margin of lead is less than the total number of registered voters in the affected areas.

Further to this, Onyeizu believes that based on the results collated in the six local government areas, he clearly won the election.

Prof Eric Ofoegbu, a professor of Mathematics at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, will be standing before the reconstituted panel which was recently relocated to Umuahia, to prove, beyond reasonable doubt, that Onyeizu actually won the election.

The team of legal experts, which will be led by no less a person than Prof. Chika Moore, is expected to prove Onyeizu’s case which has INEC, APGA and Senator Abaribe as respondents.

The proceedings of the case continue on Thursday, June 22 at the High Court Complex, Umuahia.
