The Abia State Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, has cancelled the payment of N15,000 “Pandemic Prevention Fee” in Abia State University (ABSU) and authorized the payment of N30,000 pocket money to Abia students in the institution.

This development is in response to the release by the institution’s management mandating resuming students to pay the sum of 15,000 naira as “pandemic prevention fee”.

Speaking in live semocast radio program in the state, Onyebuchi Ememanka, the secretary to the state Governor said “it’s just a one off thing, and it must not go through the process of making it a law.”

Ememanka maintained that ABSU have been regularly funded by the government outside other charges the management raise from students.

“Abia State government has been consistent in making that payment to the University. Outside school fees, they raise money from other consultancy services they render to the public”. Ememanka said.

Meanwhile, the Abia state University lecturer’s are being owned backlog of salary which drew the attention of the government to the protesting staff of the institution which had led promising to rescue the management of the institution with 400m naira.
