A fatal accident that happened on Thursday along Ikot-Ekpne road by Micheal Okpara University (MOUAU), in Umuahia, Abia State has claimed one life leaving two other students critically injured.
An eye witness account, revealed that the vehicle belonging to Akwa Ibom Transport Service (AKTC) must have lost control due to breaks failure.
“Immediately the car with speed failed break, it knocked the first student down, pushed the other girl who happened to have fractured her legs and also knocked a woman down who was cluged to the bus tire and dragged continuously until the car stopped.
“The woman’s leg scattered and she became unconscious before people around came to help her and the other MOUAU student whose legs was badly crushed.
Some students at the scene complained that AKTC has been killing MOUAU students for years now.
Candidreporters.com gathered that Officials of the students union body of MOUAU visited the accident victim at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) to access the level of fatality.
The student’s Union body released a statement on the incident.
The statement reads:
“In the afternoon of today, we were called to witness an accident which occurred at the entrance of the MOUAU park where AKTC bus driver ran into three persons, unfortunately, one of the persons whom we couldn’t identify if she’s a Student or not, died, while heading to FMC in Umuahia.
The other two sustained injuries and one of the two which we identified as a 200Level Student of Biochemistry, Uzodinma Juliet was receiving treatment upon the arrival of the Union officials and some concern Students to the hospital in solidarity.
However, we were told the other person left the scene with sustained injury.
In our efforts to get to the driver, the Union through the Director of Transportation, Comr Umachi Sampson Aboto ensured that the vehicle involved in the accident was motioned to the security unit of the University. So we can get to the culprit who had already surrendered himself to the police.
Also, the Union through the able Leadership of His Excellency, Otuonye Famous wishes to thank the Students who rushed Uzodinma Juliet to FMC and as well made deposit for her treatment and the other lady who unfortunately died on her way to the hospital and also the management of the University, through the proactive Chief Security Officer, Sir Alex Okafor (CSP) who was available to render his unflinching support today to the Students community and still on it to do more.
On this note, we implore the Students community of MOUAU and well wishers not to relent in praying for the quick recovery of Uzodinma Juliet and the other person who left the scene with a sustained injury, the reckless driver and even to the soul of the deceased to rest in perfect peace, Amen.
