The Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprises, Niger Delta, Abia State on April 14, 2022 intensified the engagement of youths in agrobusiness entrepreneurship in Umuobasi Ukwu, Bende Local Government Area of the state.

Speaking on the engagement, the Project Coordinator, Uchenna Rowland Onyeizu, Ph.D thanked the Royal Majesty, Eze John Akaniro and every stakeholder of the community for donating
15 hectares of land to the project for rice production, noting that the project is designed to create employment and empower youths who are either unemployed or underemployed in the rural communities.

According to the Coordinator, “Now these youths are expected to be trained and their capacity will be built on how to engage in rice production in a commercial quantity so that at the end of the day, they’ll make money and become economically empowered”.

He said for the ease of production, the project would undertake the burden and process of land clearing and development, while the 15 hectares would be partitioned to the selected beneficiaries for rice cultivation.

Also speaking on the production, the State Agribusiness Officer, Pastor Chukwuekezie Godwin who supervised the selection process, said that 10 incubatees (beneficiaries) would, out of the lot, be selected according to International Fund for Agricultural Development, IFAD standard, hinting that “the land preparation is already in progress”.

“We’re a working to meet up with the season; we should by now be talking of nursery bed preparations leading to permanent site preparations that would after 21 days lead to transplanting to the main field proper”.

In the selection process, he noted that the committee which was made up of, women leader, chairman, youth leader, the incubator, LIFE-ND Desk Officer, and LIFE-ND officers, was properly constituted according to IFAD selection standard.

The community youth leader, Wilson Emenike commended LIFE-ND for bringing development to their community.

Another community stakeholder, Eme Kalu also thanked the project for empowering their youths while allaying fears of insecurity during the duration of the project.

On February 1, 2022, Abia LIFE-ND graduated beneficiaries who are currently in their personal commodity entrepreneurship, boosting food capacity in the state.
