The Governor of Kano state, Abdullahi Ganduje has donated N18.5 million to 185 indigenes of the state who were victims of the Shasha market mayhem in Ibadan.

Alhaji Garba Mohammed, Kano State Commissioner for Information, who led the state government delegation, gave each of the victims N100,000 on Tuesday in Ibadan.

Other members of the delegation were Alhaji Ibrahim Muktar, Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, and Alhaji Sanusi Muhammed, Commissioner for Education.

Mohamned said that the governor had directed them to visit the victims who were indigenes of Kano State to see how they are faring and how the state government could support them.

His words: “We have about 185 people who are indigenes of Kano, affected by this unfortunate incident. We have made our calculations that each and everyone of them will get a N100,000.

“Those of them who have gone to Kano, we will also see and discuss with the governor. We will identify them in Kano and give them the money,” he said.

He said that the delegation had interacted with the victims to know their pains and challenges, promising to inform the governor to relay such to his counterpart in Oyo State.

The commissioner who expressed sadness over the unfortunate incident, called for synergy among the governors as well as security agencies.

“State governors should be able to share their experiences. Our governors were in Ibadan and Oyo. I am also happy that they are having another security meeting in Ogun State.

“So, I think governors from the Southern and Northern part of the country should try as much as possible to ensure that they continue to meet, share experiences.

“And harmonise whatever situation they are having in their respective states in terms of security challenges,” he said.

He called on Nigerians to embrace peaceful coexistence, urging them to always tolerate each other.

Also, the state Commissioner for Education, said the delegation was in Ibadan to support the victims with little cash for them to get some clothes and food.

“The support is a continuous process because we are still going to continue tomorrow. Some of them have left Ibadan for Kano. Many of them don’t even have any money with them,” he said.

Muhammed also called on Nigerians to ensure peace in the nation, lamenting that security issue in Nigerian was becoming alarming.

The Shashaarket clash started as a result of the death of Mr. Sakirudeen Adeola, a cobbler.

Mr. Adeola, a Yoruba man was reportedly hit by an object suspected to be a Charm by a yet to be identified load carrier who is an Hausa man.

The death of Adeola which was announced at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan on Friday, prompted some of the Yoruba traders to question the death of their kinsman, which later resulted in a free for all fight between the two ethnic groups.

An investigative report in the market on Saturday and Sunday, confirmed that property among which are shops, houses and cars worth over fifty million Naira (N50,000,000.00) was destroyed between Friday and Sunday in the market.

About five lives were reportedly lost as a result of the clash that erupted in the market on Friday.

Our correspondent reports that Shasha market is located in Akinyele local government area, one of the eleven local governments that make up Ibadan.

It was, however, noticed that the market has become a ghost of itself since Friday when the crisis erupted in the market.

Candidreportrs.com also gathered that since Friday, no fewer than fifteen (15) houses and thirty (30) shops have been burnt by people suspected to be hoodlums or miscreants.

Properties were reportedly destroyed by jobless youths from both Yoruba and Hausa ethnic groups.

It was gathered that both ethnic groups also recorded casualties as a result of the clash.

Sources from both sides, (Yoruba and Hausa) told that at least five people have died between Friday and Sunday as a result of the clash, though the State Police Command only confirmed the death of Mr. Adeola.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Olugbenga Fadeyi had on Friday told newsmen that the clash was between two miscreants.

The burning and killing in the market according to the two sides were perpetrated by some miscreants or hoodlums within the two ethnic groups, who seized the opportunity of the clash to foment trouble.
