Gov. Otti To Flag Off Construction Of Medical City Next Month, 11 Rural Roads, 3 Agro-logistics Hubs

Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti will flag-off the construction of the Abia Medical City on the 10th of July, 2025, a project designed to reverse medical tourism in Nigeria .

Also to be flagged off soon, are 11 rural roads projects and 3 agro-logistics hubs or markets under the World Bank Assisted Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP).

The Commissioner for Information Prince Okey Kanu disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists at Government House Umuahia, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

“The Abia Medical City is the signature project that will ultimately reverse medical tourism, not just in Abia State or the Southeast, but in the whole of Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

“This flagship project when completed ,will transform the state into a major hub for advanced medical services.

“It occupies a land space of about 200 hectares, and will feature a 1,000-bed capacity hospital, which will be equipped with state-of the-art facilities. It will also feature facilities for medical tourism, a five-star hotel complex and accommodation for both patients and their families.

The Commissioner who reiterated that the total cost of the project is put at $1.3 billion, noted that It is a collaborative project between the Abia state government and MKP International Holdings on a build, operate and transfer business model with the state government, offering its reputation, land, and other logistics.

He informed that the access road to the proposed site for the Medical City is already nearing completion and added that the facility is projected to be delivered within 24 months.

Prince Okey Kanu, who said that the 11 rural roads and 3 agro- markets soon to be flagged- off would cut across the three senatorial zones, and 17 Local Government areas of the state, involving a lot of beneficiary communities. Prince Kanu said that the 3 markets are located in Obinto – in Arochukwu LGA, Uzuakoli in Bende LGA and Ndoru in Ikwuano LGA.

He said that, the state government has so far paid a total of 4.1 billion Naira as counterpart funding for these RAAMP Projects and maintained that, “this underscores the Governor’s unwavering commitment to the statewide infrastructural development of our rural communities.”

On road infrastructure, the Commissioner said that the direct labour rehabilitation and maintenance works are currently ongoing in 48 locations across the state, out of which, two of the roads were recently completed, while three new roads were added into the maintenance basket.

The Commissioner revealed that the two completed direct labour roads include, the construction of the Agbama-Okwu-Olokoro – Umuahia South Road and the Nkwoegwu-Afugiri-Umuyota Road – in Umuahia North Local Government Area. The 3 newly added roads include; construction of Ozuama spot- Corpers’ lodge road, maintenance and asphalt overlay of Abiriba Round – About – at Orie Akwa Junction and Senator Adolphus Wabara’s Road off IBB -Ahiaeke road , Umuahia.

The Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs. Ngozi Blessing Felix and other government officials were present at the briefing.
