The Abia State Ministry of Sports is set to host the first secondary school unity games in the state tagged, Abia State Secondary Schools Unity Games, (ASSSUG)
ASSSUG will host sports athletes from public and private secondary schools in the 17 local government areas of the state at the Umuahia township stadium.
The commissioner for youth and sports development, Nwaobilor Nwadimma Ananaba gave the revelation on Tuesday during a press conference in Umuahia, Abia state capital.
Nwaobilor said he believes in scouting young talents in their early stages which his ministry has done via sensitization tour to the 17 local government areas of the state which has produced students issued the ticket for the competition.
While expressing the importance of spots to him, Nwaobilor also revealed that 24 sports competitions are involved in the secondary school unity games which kicks off on March 22 and runs to March 27, 2024.
“School sports is very important to me, If you catch them Young, they will give the best they can. Sensitizing them at local government level and having this first unity cup is the way to go. The 24 sports activities we are going to start doing now will introduce them to as many sports as they can and revitalize sports development in Abia state.” Nwaobilor said.
He also added that the revitalization of the sports ministry in the state is as a result of the total support gotten from Governor Alex Otti within the space of nine months in office which has resulted in sponsoring para badminton athletes to five countries. He revealed that talented athletes from the competition would be exposed to further training in a planned college of sports excellence which would be affiliated to european structures especially from the age of 14 to 16 and the plan also involves sponsoring successful athletes to europe for further exposures.
Nwaobilor added that with his 15 years of experience in talent scouting, it would not be a difficult task to achieve.
The Director of sports, Abia State Council, Comrade Obioma George in his speech reminded that the school sports competition has been concluded in the 17 local government areas of Abia State and winners will be converging in Umuahia on Friday, March 22, 2024 for the opening ceremony and commencement of the finals of the
ASSSUG.
He also added that Governor Alex Otti has brought in brand new sports equipment in the stadium ahead of the games as well as renovating the Enyimba stadium in Aba.
It was also revealed that Winners and runners-up who participated in any of the 24 sports activities of the competition will be given medals and other educational materials.
