The first Abia state secondary schools unity games climaxed on Wednesday with the finals of 24 sports activities at the Umuahia township stadium, Abia State.

The event was a beehive of sporting activities as the 24 games were scheduled to make up the entertaining and engaging sports competition.

Umuahia north local government area took the first position in all sporting activities with 61 medals. 28 gold, 14 silver and 19 bronze medals. While Aba south local government area won 58 medals. 22 gold, 14 silver and 22 bronze medals. Isuikwuato local government area won 36 medals. 12 gold, 11 silver,13 bronze medals.

Comrade Obioma George, the Sports Director, Abia State Sports Council expressed happiness in the turn out for the event and wished that they had more sporting activities while hoping that next year’s edition will accommodate more sporting activities. He also revealed that sports talents were discovered during the competition and will be harnessed. On the overall officiating of the competition, he gave 90 percent score to the officials.

The winners of various sports categories were given medals, certificates and plans to further their education was also revealed.

Comrade Obioma George also thanked Governor Alex Otti for reviving sports in the state.

Governor Alex Otti was represented by pastor Caleb Ajagba, the Abia State Chief of Staff. During his speech, he said governor Otti is intentional in developing sports in the state and every other sector. He congratulated all those that won laurels and encouraged those who lost not to give up but try harder next year by remaining focused.

He also stated that the first edition of secondary schools unity games competition is part of the missionary steps of Governor Otti to reposition sports in the state and county at large.

Nwaobilor Nwadimma Ananaba, the Abia State commissioner for sports and youth development thanked all the local government Mayors and the organizers of the event for making the first secondary school unity games a success.

Nwaobilor said the aim of the sports competition is to make Abia a sports development destination.

Kelechi who participated in Cheese competition and won a medal for Umuahia South Local Government Area of the state hoped to represent Nigeria one day while also thanking Government Otti for reviving sports in secondary schools.

God’s-gift who participated in scrabble competition and won a medal represented Aba south local government area. She also thanked governor Otti for reviving sports in secondary schools. She said the sports competition has given her an opportunity to chase her dream in sports.
