The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Abia State has pleaded with Governor Alex Otti to convey their message to President Bola Tinubu for the release of kidnapped pupils and teachers in Oyo State who were kidnapped May, 15, 2026
The teachers on Tuesday made the request when they embarked on a solidarity rally over the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oyo State.
The solidarity rally took off from the Secretariat and highlighted at the government house, Umuahia. The rally was led by comrade Madu Friday, the Abia State NUT Chairman.
Comrade Madu said the NUT in Abia were also pained by the ugly development as they were also directed by the National office of the NUT to carry out the rally in solidarity of pupils and teachers that have been in the den of the kidnappers.
In a chart with our source, Comrade Madu said: “The cry has been that as teachers, we are like candles, we burn ourselves to give others light, why should people have wicked heart towards us? If you’re looking for money, not in the schools that you will get money. You know that as teachers, we are rendering services of humanity to our country”. Comrade Madu said.
The teachers were received at the government house by Comrade Godson Anucha, Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Labour relations/ Labour Maters and Mrs Magdalene Ugoanusi, Senior Special Adviser on Chieftaincy and Local Government Affairs. Comrade Godson presented his address to the government officials which contains plea speech to President Tinubu to hasten up efforts for the release of the teachers and pupils.

BACKGROUND
Three schools in Ahoro-Esiele/Esiele and Yawota communities, Oriire Local Government Area were attacked. The schools are Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School.
Armed men on motorcycles attacked during school hours and took 39 pupils and students plus seven teachers. A 2-year-old toddler, Christianah Akanbi, was among those abducted.
A mathematics teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was beheaded during the attack. A motorcyclist and a security personnel also died later.
Since then, NUT ordered all public primary/secondary school teachers in Oyo State to withdraw services indefinitely from Monday June 1, 2026 until the victims are released.
President Tinubu has sent a federal delegation and approved 1,000 forest guards for Oyo State.
As of the latest reports, the victims were still in captivity with rescue operations ongoing.
