The Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has been described as a star performer by the National Leadership of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP).
The NUP leadership made the declaration during an official visit to the Governor over some unresolved issues of gratuity arrears incurred by previous governments in the state.
Speaking on behalf of the National Excutive Delegation, the NUP President, Comrade Godwin Abumuisi regreted the action of the State Leadership that caused the present misunderstanding, and pleaded with the Governor for forgiveness and consider revisiting the issue.

The NUP President said that whatever document signed by the NUP leadership in the state with the state government concerning their gratuity was signed out of ignorance and contrary to the provision of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He acknowledged that the state leadership actually signed the agreement they later denied .
Mazi Abumisi while applauding the giant strides of Governor Alex Otti in strategic sectors, noted that the Governor has through his excellent achievements earned himself a second term in office.

Responding, Governor Otti thanked the NUP President and his team for the visit, but noted that he had since promised to revisit the issue with a view to resolving it, and that he is committed to doing that.
Governor Otti chronicled what transpired with neatly signed documentary evidence and pictures, and made it clear that he had no problems with the state leadership coming to reverse themselves after the agreement in an honourable and honest manner, but that he was provoked and disappointed when they went to the media to tell contradictory lies and make denials that should never be associated with such a body.
He commended the National NUP, especially it’s President for his kind words and honest assessment of his government, and assured him and his team that the problem will be resolved, while adding that ordinary Abia Pensioners are very happy, because they now receive their full monthly pensions on a regular basis.
Governor Otti acknowledged that Abia Pensioners have consistently supported him starting from 2015 and that he has also consistently stood by them during their trying moments, and maintained that there should be no basis to have any misunderstanding with them.
Governor Otti later directed his
Senior Special Assistant on Labour Matters, Comrade Godson Aǹucha and other top government functionaries present to get the National Leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners involved in the discussion for a possible end to the issue.
