Suspected generator thieves was on Tuesday nabbed at Umuezeukwu community of Isiala-Ngwa north local government area of Abia state.

The suspected criminals attempted to cart away the soundproof power generator that was meant to be installed alongside other telecommunications equipment.

The criminal operation was said to have started around 1am on Tuesday when the gang of suspected criminals attempted to cart away the soundproof power generator said to only brought in last Saturday for the project.

Our source revealed that Umuezeukwu people have over the years grappled with poor network connectivity that has to a large extent, stalled both economic and social life in the community.

The joy of Umuezeukwu people knew no bounds when a few weeks ago, the telecommunication company began to erect a mast believed that when fully functional, will reduce the challenges associated with poor network connection. But that joy was almost cut short by the criminal activities of the gang.

Luck however ran out of them when a team of the community’s vigilance group intercepted them, and their vehicle was doomed!

One of the suspects, Ikechukwu Ifitu as claimed, a 43-year-old father of two from Agbani in Enugu State, claimed he was only the bus conductor, they had come to vandalise rail lines and not to steal the generator. But his claims, including the name he supplied was contradicted by the confession of Samuel Chijioke, another member of the gang from Ehime Mbano, in Imo State.

Ikechukwu Anya from Amekpu Ohafia in Abia State said they were contracted by a man he called pastor who is suspected to be a native of the area.

Interestingly, one of the victims of such thefts said it has been going on for a while around the area as he identified their operational vehicle.

Items recovered from the suspects include: a steel roller, one heavy duty bolt cutter, a vehicle jack, a spare tyre, screwdrivers and spanners.

The suspects were handed over to the men of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Nigeria Police with the hope that they would track down the fleeing members of the gang and bring to an end the menace.
