FROM KEKE TO CAPACITY: How Governor Alex Otti is Empowering Abia Youths Differently (OPINION)

For too long, “youth empowerment” in Abia State meant one thing: share keke tricycles, hand out a few political appointments, pay peanuts, and call it a day. The result was predictable. Young people became mobile, but not productive. They were visible during elections, and redundant after. Society got traffic, not transformation.

That era is over.

Under Governor Alex Otti, Abia has made a decisive shift — from handouts to human capital. At the center of this shift is the Abia State Leadership Academy, ASLA, a program that treats young people not as political errand boys, but as the engine room of the state’s future.

What is the Abia Leadership Academy?
Initiated by the Otti administration, ASLA is a leadership, innovation, and entrepreneurship bootcamp for 1,000 Abia youths per cohort. Delivered in partnership with the Enterprise Development Centre, Pan-Atlantic University, the Academy combines CBT screening, intensive training, mentorship, and project development.

The curriculum is deliberate: governance, public policy, AI, technology, entrepreneurship, value creation, and civic responsibility. Participants wear one uniform — the white ASLA shirt — because the focus is not on who you know, but on what you can build.

Positive Impacts on Abia Youths

  1. Building Thinkers, Not Dependents
ASLA graduates are launching businesses, tech solutions, and community projects. Instead of waiting for appointments, they are creating jobs. The Academy has restored confidence and competence to a generation that was told to “wait for government.”
  2. Creating a Leadership Pipeline
Through direct mentorship and exposure to public officials and industry experts, ASLA is grooming the next set of commissioners, CEOs, and community leaders. This addresses the leadership gap that keke distribution could never solve.
  3. Dignity and Skills That Last
A tricycle can break down. A political appointment can end. But skills, networks, and mindset cannot be retrieved. ASLA gives youths assets that compound over time.

Beyond ASLA: TechRise and Soccer Fest
The Otti government is not stopping at leadership training. It is attacking youth unemployment from multiple angles.

Abia TechRise
This is the state’s flagship tech talent program. Participants are trained in software development, product design, data, and digital skills. Critically, each participant is provided with a laptop to ensure learning continues beyond the classroom. TechRise is producing employable talent for Nigeria’s digital economy, right here in Aba and Umuahia.

Abia Soccer Fest
Sports is also being used as a development tool. The Soccer Fest identifies, trains, and showcases young football talent, while also teaching discipline, teamwork, and career pathways in sports management. It is keeping youths engaged productively and opening international opportunities.

Compare this to the past: keke and token appointments. Those programs fed stomachs for weeks and months. ASLA, TechRise, and Soccer Fest are feeding futures for a lifetime.

The Otti Difference: Corporate Nuance in Governance.
What makes this work is the Governor’s corporate background. Governor Otti is running government like an enterprise — with KPIs, partnerships, due process, and measurable outcomes.

He understands that you don’t grow an economy by sharing assets. You grow it by building capacity. That is why the focus is on training, tools, and platforms, not on temporary palliatives. It is governance with strategy, not sentiment.

The message to Abia youths is now clear: the government will not make you redundant. It will make you relevant.

The Abia Leadership Academy, TechRise, and Soccer Fest prove that empowerment does not have to be noisy to be effective. It can be quiet, structured, and transformational.

To those still pushing old narratives and expecting the wrong old practices: Abia youths are busy. They are in class, in labs, on the pitch, and in boardrooms. They no longer have time for politics of peanuts.

Help is here at last.
