The Abia State Chapter of the Labour Party has announced an essay competition open for Abia students in the state and those in the diaspora.

According to Barr. Chuks Akamadu, the Abia Labour Party State Secretary during a press conference held on Thursday in Umuahia, explained that those who can participate in the essay competition are students in secondary schools or tertiary institutions as well as those in the diaspora.

The topic for the essay was given as “The New Abia and Need for Consolidation”.

Barr. Chuks also explained that the purpose for the debate is to
elevate the conversation around youth involvement in the political process, to activate and mobilise the youth segment of the society to contribute to the ongoing political transformation of Abia State.

Barr. Chuks also added that the essay competition aligns with the vision of Governor Alex Otti, which is to grow a well organised, disciplined and impact-oriented party that promotes equal Opportunity and Social Justice as well as to complement good governance in the state”.

The Abia Labour Party said “through this literary exercise, the Party is seeking to collate ideas and perspectives of young Abians, and have them synthesized into viable policy options and government programmes”.

“This is so because as the ruling party in Abia, we reckon that we have a duty to periodically scan our environment, evaluate preponderance public opinions, distill them and present the outcome to our government in power for consideration”.Barr. Chuks said.

Interested persons of the categories are to send in their entries on or before July 17, 2026.

For both categories, a valid entry MUST not exceed one thousand five hundred (1,500) words. The Prize-Giving Day Ceremony will be held on August 3rd, 2026.

The Essay Writing Competition would present an opportunity for young people of Abia to connect with the truism that indeed Labour Party is the party for Papa, Mama and Pikin! Because, ours is a conscious effort to mainstream our Pikins into Abia’s political discourse. We have come to give our youths a voice. Let them speak, through their ink, and as critical stakeholders, too, because Abia’s future belongs to them. Barr. Chuks said.
