Abia State is set to host the first Abia para Badminton International Championship and the All Africa Para Badminton Championships.
The event which has gotten the approval of the international Badminton Federation and all African Badminton Championships is scheduled to run from September 30 to October 5, 2025 as the All Africa Para Badminton Championship will run through October 6 to October 12, 2025.

The development of the scheduled sports activities was made public on Tuesday in Umuahia by the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Hon. Nwaobilor Ananaba during a press conference tagged: Media and Marketing Reveal of the First Abia Para Badminton International and the All Africa Para Badminton Championship.

According to Hon. Ananaba, the event is more than sports.
“It is a global statement of who we are as Abians”. Hon Ananaba said.
He also said the sports event came into fruition due to the mission and vision of Governor Alex Otti of Abia State.
“The results have been overwhelming, he approved our hosting rights without hesitation, knowing the international prestige it will bring to Abia State”. Hon. Ananaba said.
He also added that Governor Otti provided funding for the project and specialized vehicles for athletes with wheel chairs to aid free movement.
On the readiness of the event to kickoff, Hon. Ananaba also revealed that the state government has also provided cutting edge equipment for the tournament.

The event was graced with the presence of the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu who is also the chairman of the organizing committee of the first Abia para Badminton Championship.

Engr Emetu in his speech said the hosting of the event is a statement of capacity, hospitality and vision of who Abians really are while adding that it is an opportunity for Abia State to show its organizational excellence, cultural wants and unwavering respect for all athletes activities.
He also added that the vision and unwavering support of Governor Otti made it possible while also noting that sports unites people beyond borders, politics and differences.
Engr. Emetu also encouraged the athletes to compete with pride, resilience and courage.
On marketing of the games, corporate sponsors and well-meaning Abians were advised to grab the opportunity to promote and invest in the games, commercial wise as the event will inspire new generation of athletes.

“Para sports in particular embodied resilience, courageous and triumph of the human spirit. The event will inspire a new generation of athletes in Abia”. Engr. Emetu said.
The National Coordinator for para badminton, Samuel Ekeoma and other dignitaries attended the event. Ekeoma thanked Governor Otti for his input which has he said has yeiled the planned attraction of sporting activities to Abia State.

The event is also expected to boost economic activity in the state while it lasts.
