Women Stage Solidarity Walk For Emergency Rule in Rivers

Some women in Port Harcourt have taken to the streets staging a solidarity walk for the emergency rule in Rivers state.

The women are all dressed in white, and holding placards with inscriptions like ‘prosecute the bombers of Rivers assembly, ‘state of emergency is constitutional’.

The women are moving across major routes in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital, while belting solidarity tunes and slogans.

They were led by a former Commissioner for Social Welfare in Rivers, Ifeyinwa Aguma, who is an ally of the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike. The protesters threw their weight behind Ibok-Ette Ibas, who President Bola Tinubu appointed as the administrator of the state. They urged him to continue his good work in the state.

On April 11, a group of women in Rivers protested the suspension of Siminalayi Fubara, the governor, and the declaration of emergency rule in the state by President Bola Tinubu.

Last month, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, owing to the unending political crisis in the state. He suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and the members of the House of Assembly for six months.

Citing “security reports,” in the wake of two pipeline explosions in the state, Tinubu said the declaration of a state of emergency was “inevitably compelling”.

“By this declaration,” Tinubu said, “the Governor of Rivers State, Mr Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the House of Assembly of Rivers State are hereby suspended for an initial period of six months.
