Former governor of Ekiti State,Ayo Fayose, shared his opinion on recent controversies surrounding the concluded presidential and gubernatorial elections in recent weeks.

Fayose in an interview with ARISE NEWS on Thursday spoke on the recent criticisms of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He made it clear that the pressure and blame should be taken off the Independent National Electoral Commission and put on the Nigerian system for its failure to properly uphold democracy.

Speaking that election free and fair? je said; “It may not be the best but it was credible and he (Tinubu) will do all he can to remain the winner of that election.”

Fayose highlighted the numerous issues that surrounded the “weak” Nigerian system, from the judiciary to the national security agencies, to the media accusing them of negatively moulding minds of the public against the nation’s polity.

He urged the public to shun the finger pointing, stating that everyone had a role to play in the failed electoral process.

He emphasized that Nigeria was in fact the main problem itself and commended INEC’s efforts to uphold proper electoral processes.

According to Fayose, “INEC is just one party to the parties of this whole issue on ground. INEC does not carry guns; does not have powers to do certain things other than ensure the free and fair election in the country. The police and military are to blame and largely the politicians.”

The former governor called out politicians and the judiciary for using the election period as a money making scheme through the succeeding legal actions concerning discrepancies of the election.

He also let the public know that the irregularities that took place during the election should not only be put on a particular party but on desperation of incumbent governors and other politicians as a means to hold power in the nation.

However, he commended the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, likening him to a hurricane that challenged and brought to light the ills of the Nigerian system of politics.

“Obi came like a hurricane and did what no one has done, he exposed everyone. Our leaders are products of the Nigerian society, The system is sick and no candidate is innocent.”

Fayose further called for a thorough assessment of the Nigerian system at all levels, saying that change would never occur until this is done.

He said there was a need to rekindle patriotism in Nigerian citizens.
