The maiden Abia state school quiz competition sponsored by the Raymond Nkemdirim Foundation climaxed on Thursday producing the winner of the one million naira price for the overall best school in the competition.

The event was held at the International Conference Centre, Ogurube Layout, Umuahia, the Abia state capital.

Mayfair Academy, Umuahia emerged the overall winner of the Schools Quiz Competition winning the first prize of one million naira.

The first runner-up was Ovom Girls’ High School, Aba. They were rewarded with five hundred thousand naira while the second runner-up, Holy Brilliant Academy, Alayi – Bende received two hundred and fifty thousand naira.

A total of 254 schools participated in the competition at the Local Government Area and Zonal levels before the finslists from each of the three Education Zones of the State.

The event was organized with the effort of the Abia State Ministry of Education in conjunction with Ray Nkemdirim Foundation.

The format for schools participation was open for public and private secondary schools in the State.

The Governor of Abia state,Dr Okezie Ikpeazu was representated by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Chris Ezem.

In the governor’s speech, he encouraged students to always study hard so as to write and pass their public exams once.

He also emphasized on the need to maintain the states current leading position in external exams such as WAEC and NECO. He added that hardwork is the key determinant of academic excellence.

As part of the governor’s speech, parents and teachers were reminded on the need to close monitor their children and students with the prospect of achieving academic excellence.

He thanked Chief Raymond Nkemdirim and his foundation for putting up the competition and assured him that government would continue to partner him in building youths that would make a better society.

Chief Ray Nkemdirim, the founder of Raymond Nkemdirim Foundation, and also the chairman of FLO FM 94.9 Umuahia in his speech revealed that the essence of the competition is to bring into fore the importance of education as well as give back to the society as formal education means all to him. He informed that it is his desire to impact on commitment and hardwork. He also hinted that the competition would be an annual event.

Chief Nkemdirim thanked Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for the seriousness attached to education and the kind of support he received from his government, saying that it would spur him to do more. He described the day as a day of joy and appreciated all that contributed to the success of the event.

Also in attendance was Prof. Udo Nwokocha, who represented the Vice Chancellor of Abia State University, ABSU. He congratulated Ray Nkemdirim, for ensuring the students are given the opportunity to excel.He also thanked the State government for their education friendly posture.

Kenechukwu Nwosu the chairman of the event on his part also thanked the State Governor for creating enabling environment for schools to run and appreciated Chief Raymond Nkemdirim for initiating the competition to develop talents. He stated that the best way of developing the children is through such competition.

The Coordinator, Ray Nkemdirim Foundation, Uche Ama-Ohakah saluted the partnering agents for their contributions and prayed God to continue to bless Abia with people like Chief Raymond Nkemdirim who would support government to develop education.
