Following the conditional suspension of the strike embarked by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the lingering strike also embarked by the academic and non-academic staff of Abia State University (ABSU) over backlog of salaries owed, the new vice chancellor of the University, Professor Maxwell Ogbulu, on Monday Vowed that he will resign if he fails to turn things around.

Candidreporters.com gathered that In a meeting held at the University campus with ASUU members and other union members on seperate venue and time, the Vice chancellor, Professor Maxwell Ogbulu pleaded with the academic and non-academic staff of the university to accept one month salary and resume work.

Thus, Abia State University ASUU members have agreed to call off the lingering strike in respect of the plea and vow made by the new Vice Chancellor of the University based on the recognition of who he is and the personality he has presented in the university and beyond.

The vice chancellor said he should be given benefit of doubt and watch him turn around the state of things in the university in one year.

The new VC also pleaded for acceptance of one month salary payment against the backlog of salaries owed which will accumulate to six months by January ending 2021.

In a reaction, the ABSU, ASUU union members pointed out that as customarily done in making all their deliberations public, they will alert the public on what has been resolved in the meeting with the VC incase of any disappointment in the future, so that the public will not look at the union as unsympathetic.

In other words the union affirms that it owes the public the duty of explaning their resolves to the public through the media and it is done solely for the purpose of future industrial actions that may be attracted by failed agreement, thus making the public understand their stand.

At the moment, an official statement is being expected from the Abia state University management on the resumption date for the 2021 Academic year while monitoring the effect and implication of the second wave of COVID-19.
