Comrade Uchenna Obigwe, the Abia State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), was on Wednesday removed from office and replaced with Comrade Elder Eze Idima, after a long legal battle over the emergence Comrade Obigwe.

Comrade Obigwe has been Abia state’ NLC Chairman for close to two years with a tenure of office which was expected to last for four years according to NLC’ constitution.

Comrade Uchenna’s removal has been officially acknowledged by the National headquarters of NLC through a letter sent to the Abia state Labour Secretariat.

Comrade Idima was sworn into office on Wednesday at the Abia NLC office in Umuahia with the attendance of other NLC leaders and members in the state.

Speaking with candidreporters.com after the event, the new Chairman of the Union said, ” I have been on this because after the election, there has been a petition, a panel was set up for that purpose to look into our petition, and by the end of the day, they found out that our petition has merit.

“The National executive council of the union gave their verdict based on the report, they permitted that I should take over the chairmanship of the congress, Abia State Chapter.”

Following the removal of comrade Uchenna Obigwe from office, the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) had written to the former NLC chairman to handover properties in his possession.

Speaking further about the litigation , Comrade Idima said, “we both vie for the election but we said he wasn’t qualified to contest, we went to court and it has taken up to two years now”

Asking about the task ahead of the new Abia NLC Chairman, considering the state of Abia workers, Comrade Idima assured a proactive step in office that will benefit Abia workers.

His words; ” we are going to work with comrade members, especially sec member, we are also going to mobilise members to engage the government to make sure that the welfare of the workers are met. It’s our principle duty and we are going to pursue it with vigor.

“Our work doesn’t require having existing good relationship with the governor, it’s an official assignment. We have a governor who is enlightened, we are coming as a leadership of the workforce, so I wouldn’t want to say the relationship is good or bad.

” Some of the welfare Abia workers have been yearning for, by the grace of God, government is going to take care of them. We are going to make sure that we place the interest of the workers first before our interest.”Comrade Idima assured.
