Revelations have emerged on why Bishop Emeka Nwankpa, the Accord Party governorship candidate in the March 18 rescheduled governorship election, was quick to ask INEC to declare Dr Alex Otti, the Labour Party candidate winner and governor-elect.

Fielding questions from newsmen shortly after a meeting with some key officials of the Accord Party yesterday (Thursday), the revered cleric and philanthropist revealed that he was not desperate to become Governor, but desperate to ensure a positive change in Abia State.

In his words, ‘I was determined to win the election because I have what it takes to make Abia a better state. I was not desperate to become Governor, but only desperate to see a positive change in Abia. But since it was the will of God to give Ndi Abia victory through Alex Otti, I had no option but to accept it.’

‘I am a man who believes in justice, fairness and honesty. When I saw that Dr Alex Otti clearly won the election, I didn’t want the mandate of the people to be thwarted. That was the reason why I was the first person to publicly pressure INEC to declare him winner and governor-elect. It doesn’t mean that I had a pact with him prior to the election. I only did what was right in the sight of God and man.’

Recall that while INEC delayed the completion of the computation of the governorship election results which led to great anxiety across the state, Bishop Emeka Nwankpa quickly issued a statement urging INEC to declare Dr Alex Otti winner. This singular courageous act promoted other aspirants to add their own voices to the call.

It is also important to state that Dr Alex Otti, while addressing the press in Abuja, publicly acknowledged Bishop Emeka Nwankpa and others for demanding that the right things be done. Dr Otti repeated his gratitude to Bishop Emeka Nwankpa and others in his acceptance speech shortly after his declaration as winner and Abia’s governor-elect.

Bishop Emeka Nwankpa went further to pray to God to grant Dr Otti the wisdom and courage to govern Abia, and urged the governor-elect to ensure that he fulfills his campaign promises to Ndi Abia.
