The Abia state Agency For mass Literacy, Adult And Non-Formal Education, on Wednesday launched an Adult learning centre at Obete-Ukwu, Ibeme Autonomous community of Obingwa local government area of the state.

The event was attended by community leaders, Chiefs, village heads, and clergy.

An Education expert, Chief G.I Akara, the Executive Director, Abia state Agency For Mass Literacy, Adult And Non-Formal Education, was at the venue for inspection of the facility and presentation of learning materials.

During his speech, Chief Akara, made it clear that “Adult Education is a second chance opportunity for brothers, sisters, fathers and mothers in the community to realize their education yearnings and aspirations”.

Chief Akara also added that “An illiterate will always operate from a position of disadvantage. An uneducated person is a dangerous burden on the community. In fact, the Adult education goes a long way to reducing crime in our society.

“It is to a great extent , the answer for insecurity, rape, militancy, murder, armed robbery, political instability, family problems that leads to divorce, poor sanitary and hygiene conditions in our communities, poor citizenship, poverty, high mother/child mortality rates, poor Agriculture outputs, poor evangelism and lack of sustained Christian Revival.” Chief Akara revealed.

“A traditional ruler, who is surrounded by illiterates, is in great danger. A political leader whose constituents are majorly uneducated and illiterates is in great trouble. A family whose memberare majorly uneducated can never go far. A church leader, whose congregants are majorly uneducated, will find the great commission, an up task.”

As a boost to the opening of the learning centre, books and other writing materials were given as well as sanitizers by the Agency.

The traditional ruler of the community and some council members expressed satisfaction about the development in their community.

Students of the learning centre expressed satisfaction over the innovation which they described as an opportunity to learn despite missing out in their developing stage.

Precious Ogbonna, a beneficiary of the program said: “We thank the executive governor of Abia state for the opportunity of been educated despite our old age. May God continue to be with him.”
