Wife of Abia State Governor Mrs Prescilla Otti has warned that the law would catch up with anyone troubling widows in the State with outdated traditional practices.
Mrs Otti who stated this on Tuesday in an event to commemorate the 2024 International Widows day celebration held at JAAC building Ogurube layout in Umuahia, condemned all obnoxious widowhood practices, adding that her office is always open and ready to protect the rights of widows under compulsion to engage in unwholesome practices to mourn their late spouses.
Speaking on the theme of this year’s event titled; “Land Rights For Windows” , Mrs Otti represented by wife of the Deputy Governor Mrs Adaeze Emetu, expressed plans to support about 500 indigent widows through microfinance loans, healthcare services, skill development and vocational training, computer literacy programs, adult education, cooperatives and legal assistance among others.
The event which featured lectures from keynote speakers, also witnessed the distribution of food items and empowerment of 51 indigent widows selected from the 17 LGAs of the State.
