Chief Charles Obioha Ogbonnaya, a top chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has faulted the decision of the leadership of the PDP and governor Okezie Ikpeazu over zoning formula in the state for the 2023 gubernatorial election.
Chief Ogbonnaya in a press conference on Monday in his Umuahia residence revealed his contribution to development of PDP in Abia State from the structure of Senator Theodore Orji, the former governor of Abia State through the Abia Charter of Equity.
Chief Ogbonnaya was aggrieved that the party’s formula was neglected while scouting for candidates that will run for the party in the coming 2023 gubernatorial election in the state.
He also said that governor Ikpeazu has surrounded himself with advisers which he now advices.
In his words:” He has surrounded himself with advisers which he is advising and that’s why things are going wrong. Most of the people today shouting it must remain in Abia central/Ngwa land are the same people against Okezie Ikpeazu when he was aspiring to become governor.
” Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s friend came to my house one early morning and asked me why am I supporting him to be governor and I looked at him, brought my drink and asked him to leave. There was serious opposition against him.” Chief Ogbonnaya said.
Chief Ogbonnaya holds the view that it is the turn of Abia north to become the governor of Abia State according to the said Abia Charter of Equity.
Chief Ogbonnaya also emphasized that he has no hatred for the Ngwa race of the state.
“If I hate Ngwa people, how come did I pick governor Okezie Ikpeazu to run as governor of Abia State? I still support him as the governor and I still advise him as the governor. I brought him to the people that made him governor. If he decides to throw me away as a friend so be it.
“I may have made a mistake by pouring libation by calling Ngwa man, but I still maintain it that no Ngwa man becomes the governor in 2023, I will work hard to see that no Ngwa becomes governor in 2023, there is no going back to that.” Chief Ogbonnaya said.
Chief Ogbonnaya also narrated the visit of guber aspirant of the party allegedly anointed by governor Okezie Ikpeazu to run as sole candidate of the party.
“Professor Ikonne came to my house with his brother, he came and said he is consulting and wants to become the governor. I told him which governor? To do what? You are not a party man, you don’t know much in politics. He has retired, he is 75 years old. He was staggering, tell me which strength are you going to use in governing Abia?
“Governor Okezie Ikpeazu is my brother and my friend, I will continue to advise him because I know what he is doing is wrong. Abia governor come 2023 will come from Abia north.”
Chief Ogbonnaya holds the view that if the gubernatorial seat of the party is not zoned to Abia north, “PDP will fail.”
He also revealed that aggrieved members of the party are leaving.
“For those that believes in stealing money. Let’s see what will happen when PDP will lose.
“If PDP loses in 2023, there will be panel of enquiry. If PDP fails, woe to them. Chief Ogbonnaya said.
