If Governor Alex Otti was pre-occupied with politics, politicking and re-election, the giant strides he has recorded in government, which have seen the state consistently appear positive in all indices of governance, wouldn’t have been possible.
At least, Port Harcourt road, Ohanku road, Umuahia-Uzuakoli-Abiriba-Ohafia road and Omenuko Bridge which are all legacy projects would not have been completed in record time. They would have been reserved as topics for re-election campaign. This is a fact.
The earlier those dragging Governor Otti into petty political issues realised that the most important essence of politics is good governance, the better for them.
We cannot be discussing political party on every Eke Day; that’s not what matters to Abians. It becomes more ridiculous when those who had begged him in 2019 to intervene and use his relationship with their party leaders at the highest level to help them secure their party ticket in Abia, now disrespectfully present themselves as having what it takes to decide whether he can join “their party” or not, even when he had long made it very clear that he has no interest in joining the party.
Democracy meets its essence and thrives better when politicians have multiple political platforms to operate on.
Every political party must be proud and contented with the members it has, and if it must extend an invitation to a non-member considered a Beautiful Bride like Governor Alex Otti, then such an invitation must be extended with respect and humility, not with threat, arrogance and disrespect.
Most of those Governors who belonged to the PDP between 1999 and 2007 didn’t do better that Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos State who belonged to the AD, in spite of the difficulties he encountered in the hands of the then Federal Government.
Good governance is not tied to political party, but to capacity, competence and sincerity- so is relationship tied to character and comportment. Governor Alex Otti’s relationship and friends transcend political party, so those in Abia who are gazing to find out what is happening at the highest level, should know that this matter is above their pay grade. Forget it, shoe get size.
In all that we do, we must all realise that there’s no political office that’s permanent, hence the need for us not to detach humility from our conduct, even as public office holders.
