Court Slams 5 count Charge on Former Abia Commissioner Over Land Grabbing Allegation

Chima Kanu, a former.Abia commissioner for Rural Development has been arraigned before the Magistrate Court and charged on 5 counts over alleged land grabbing allegation of about 100 plots of land at Uzuakoli, Abia State.

During the court proceedings on Tuesday in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, in a suit marked Charge NO: U/600/2025, Inspector General of Police vs Mr Chima Kanu, it was gathered that some plots of land at Uzuakoli called “Ala Okwu-Lodu” which is in actual and peaceable possession of Nworisara Anasonye Family, Headed by Mr. Nwarisara Nwokedi was allegedly trespassed and ownership claimed by the accused, Chima Kalu.

Mr. Kanu was charged by the court on 5 counts which involves Forcible Entry, Breach of Peace, Felony, Stealing and Unlawfully Debar.

The court read that Forcible Entry, is an offence punishable under Section 517A of the Criminal Code Cap C38 Laws of the Federation, 2004 as applicable in Abia State.

While the Breach of Peace, is an offence punishable under Section 81 of the Criminal Code Cap C38 Laws of the Federation, 2004 as applicable in Abia State.

The court also holds that Felony is an offence punishable under Section 516A (1) of the Criminal Code Cap C38 Laws of the Federation, 2004 as applicable in Abia State.

While Stealing is a punishable offence in section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap C38 Laws of the Federation, 2004 as applicable in Abia State.

Also the fifth couth, Unlawfully Debarring, is said to be an offence punishable under Section 249 (d) of the Criminal Code Cap C38 of the Federation, 2004 as applicable in Abia State.

Mr. Chima Kanu was offered bail after the first sitting of the matter as the case is meant to gather momentum as the days go by.

It was also gathered the plaintiff claimed that he have the required documents for the plots of lands and the accused is yet to present any before the court.

Before the court sitting on Tuesday, it was gathered that the Mr. Chima had avoided court summons from previous courts which had been allegedly avoided on claimed deteriorating health issues.
